True. But Microsoft doesnt sell to Enterpise Level Products
Good analysis of what was said...and I agree with your points. To add to that, I think this move by Balmer and Microsoft does show what I suspect...that Microsoft is moving or attempting to move into bigger business....not just sell to the new so-called buyers of IT.

Their problem with that is two fold....Microsoft is losing business now in the small and midsize markets now, from what Ive read and not gaining much new market share. They think they can move into large corporate America and multinational companies with products that align with their needs now and sell to corp. execs??? I dont think so! They do have the know-how or enterrpise level products other than maybe SQL 2005 and Office, to do that. What enterprise level product lines do they have that can begin to compete with the big players and vendors like SAP and Oracle and Unix? How the heck do they think they can do that without adopting open source w3c recommendations and other schemas? They rewrite all that stuff and it makes integration impossible with non-Microsoft technologies now.

Second, the old original problem with IT that business people know business and Technologists know technology hasnt changed and wont I predict, despite what many soothsayers and analysts say will happen. They say the new technology professional and this buyers of IT, managers of IT and CIO.CEO's of IT will be this mystical magical know it all, hybrid person that somehow has both the business school training yet the "in-the-trenches" savy experienced developer/programmer guru and be able to take control of all aspects of IT in business, replace the programmers and know how to buy and integrate all of Microsofts new baby technologies and integarte and implement them eyes closed, see ROI overnight, and all is good in the universe.

Aint't ever going to happen! And CEO's continue to make the biggest blunders of all when it comes to IT and setting realistsic goals with management as they attempt to divorce the programmer from their organizations. Why? Very simple....technology is widening and deepening every day now, as are the demands, and requirements of your average IT specialists. Business is going global and requires people who can focus on what they do bests....talk business over the phone and use software to manage relationships, etc. Business people, as a result, dont have time to be technology programmers, and integrators...and savy engineers dont have time (or interest) to try and learn why Vista is so special or try and seel the vague pluses for Sharepoint Portal Server to a handleful of cleints over Windows Live. They are too busy patching firewalls, and programming .NET bug fixes and solving real-world complex issues.

What I hope Balmer and his team do is stop trying to carve up the IT pie into smaller and smaller marketing pieces and proprietary software tools that disappear from the IT landscape every 5 years anyway, I hope they try and do what the newer companies like Google are doing look at the IT world.....INNOVATE!
