In reality, the biggest competitor to MS is Google, they just don't want to
admit it. Google is the one that has the biggest, baddest network of data centers arround the world, with the ability to scale faster and cheaper than anybody else. Google is also 100% standards based so that their applications in any browser. Google is popularizing the move to web services that will eliminate the dependencies on the OS. And, as consumers want simpler easier to use applications without the hassles of a complicated desktop, Microsoft is going in the opposite direction.

What Google needs to do is drive more adoption of Firefox. Google needs to make a killer web service that only works with Firefox, and since Firefox runs on all platforms and is a simple download, they can get 100% coverage. They need to turn the tables on MS and create lock-in to the Firefox platform.
