MS is too busy trying to kill open standards to just embrace the open web
and create the best products. Vista is all about creating alternatives to open web standards to create lock-ins for the twin monopolies. Microsoft is terrified of the prospect of having to compete on the merits, they will try to maintain lock-in at all costs.

And, remember, if the technologies in Vista are used for just 2% of web sites (heck even 1%), Microsoft will have won. Who wants to be incompatible with even 1% of web sites?

Until other desktop OSes (Mac, Linux, Solaris) get a critical mass arround the world, lock-in tricks will continue to work for MS. We may have 10% Firefox right now, but 99.99% have access to IE for IE only web sites, so people will keep taking the easy out and only test for IE. We need 10% WITHOUT access to IE before 99.9% of web sites will write to standards. What website would want to be closed to 10% of visitors?

Well, don't write MS off just yet.
