Ahh that little Linux has grown up
the irony is that Linux was supposed to be fighting the desktop war and gaining market share from the {beloved|hated|nobody gives a crap} ms windows.

The closer Linux gets to the mature UNIX kernels the more will be deployed in the high end arena. That will make the traditionally UNIX market less costly which is good.

I just cannot understand how is it possible this little piece of s/w put together pretty much by a single person in 2-3 years has atained so much stability and robustness and it can be used by mainframes, large SMPs and large clusters? Apparently there is inherent value in this kernel. I also wonder how come other platforms that were `designed' and promoted as being the platforms of choice for professional data centers cannot even run on more than 8 processors? And how is it possible that Linux runs on every possible h/w, other platforms run only on, say, the aging x86 one?

I personally would rather see UNIX becoming cheaper but the effect is almost the same. Let alone the backporting of all the linux apps to Unix.

Let's see though for how long vendors will have to try to compromise the low-end PC FAT windows clients with the high-end UNIX/Linux servers in the data center. Since the ms windows cannot move up to the high end, the low end PCs should become friendlier to UNIX/Linux.
