Well they got to sell something
They are trying to sell servers to make money on hardware. Since they are a [service] company now, and more than likely in the future have a lot of competiton from other places it is harder to turn a profit. Plus with linux, a lot of companies do not need Ibm's help with the operating system.

It is a double edged sword, a lot of places just buy Dell servers [blade]..... It is cheaper and they do all their in house support, that is hurting Ibm.
