Broadband is a necessity at my house
Maybe my family is the exception, but we can't live without our broadband--or, to be more precise, our current lifestyles would be severely impacted by anything less. We don't even watch that bigscreen TV that much any more; can you believe it? I mean, TV is so freakin' non-interactive--where's the keyboard?!
Instead, we are all doing email--how did people communicate before email? My wife uses ebay to sell things that she sews and embroiders (uploading digital photos)--and she also watches the stock market. My teenagers use the net to maintain a fan-site, to download music and to upload their own music, homework-research, ICQ.
I use it for work, stock market, weather, sports, ebay, researching home-improvement products, buying computer memory, politics, gaming, surfing. We have 4 Windows PCs and 2 printers networked seemlessly--file-sharing is a breeze now. Each is connected to the cable modem by ethernet cables we ran under the house. Before broadband, each user had to take turns with "the good machine with the 56k modem hooked to the phone line." Needless to say, we watched more TV back then, missed a lot of phone calls and didnt do much on the web.
Now we have four power-users running in parallel--each with his or her own set of interactive lifestyles opening new doors every day. And that gives us a lot in common.
I don't even mind paying COMCAST the $40 a month--what I do hate is having to deal with virus protection for each machine on a daily basis, with four different annual subscriptions to Symantec. (Yes, sadly I am paying for Microsoft Windows vulnerability, because I am addicted to its versatility.)

Like I say, maybe we are the exception, but my kids represent the future, and they are definitely into broadband for life.
