Waste of Effort?
I live in Rural America. Lander, Wyoming to be exact. The entire
county has a population of 35,000 (pop. density of 3.2 people /
sq. mile) and covers 9200 sq. miles.

The phone line to my houe is 40+ year old copper. I live 5 miles
from town. I sit behind a pair gain (DSL won't work with a pair
gain). Dial up speed is 19.2k Max.

DSL has an effective range of 20,000 feet. That is cable feet, not
straight line distance, thruput drops with distance. So what you
are asking is for the local Telco to install new cable, put in a
DSLAM every 20,000 feet and feed the DSLAM with at least a T
-1. Figure on about $50,000 per mile for new copper,
equipment and man hours. Still sound cheap?

I work for an ISP. We do wireless internet, dial up, & DSL. My
farthest customer is 18 miles from the office and can pull 2MB/s
on an unshaped IP. Our cost for this is realitively cheap
(compaired to the phone co. or cable co) in reaching these
customers. From 1 tower I can sevice about 150 sq. miles, but
that doesn't take into account the mountains, blufs and hills so
its a lot less than that.

Out here in the sticks it's real hard to get any type of broadband
except satellite, which sucks hard, IMHO. If you do any gaming,
forget satellite.

Even with broadband over powerlines there will still be people
left out as not everyone can afford to have the power company
run powerline 30 miles out to thier ranch, they have thier own
power generators.

So no, DSL is NOT cheaper!
