That is a pretty big security hole. Logging the password makes absolutely no sense. The person who came up with that concept deserves a big, fat slap. However, if I recall correctly, with an expert or expert-server installs writting the log to disk may of been optional. If that was the case, then the flaw is only present for default installs - so it is not that bad.

Either way, Ubuntu is not that great of a distro (although squeezing the basic system into ~200MB of disk-space is nice), so a six week delay won't hurt it.
