Well, one of the reasons for acquiring companies, is the employees.
Sometimes that is that main reason for buying these companies. But, being able to read and write both MS Office and ODF formats is not exactly simple. By buying a company like this, if Google can get to market even 6 months faster, with a better product, that could mean hundreds of millions in extra revenues, and more market share in the end. Think time to market and employees.

The problem for Microsoft, they can buy these little companies, but the key employees are much more likely to quit. The idea of working for Google is about 100x more atractive than it is for Microsoft.
