software is wierd sometimes
I would expect that if office was wiped out, that windows would take a considerable time to overcome since it is very cheap OEM, and as such, the incentive to learn another OS (no matter how simple or complicated) is small.

However, I retain the right to be wrong, since who'd have thought that java would be the biggest amount of code running in 2006? And, I bet it is since there are something like a billion compatible mobiles on the planet, and I'm totally amazed with kids and young people. The fortune they spend on java games and ringtones... amazing.

One great side effect is the money being spent is thrusting mobile phone technology forward. I can now get free (on minimum contract) a Samsung ZM60 which has 1.3 Megapixel camera, MP3 player with 50 meg of space and a microSD card slot so you can add 512 meg for very little cost. With 512 meg, you can record hours of Mpeg4 video on the device.

Extraordinary.
I think the advancement in battery technology etc with mobile phones makes the PC industry look a bit trivial.
