Esoteric? Sounds like Apple's old Open Doc. Patent infringement anyone?
Going by the description of how this is supposed to work, it sounds remarkably like the Open Doc system that was created by Apple Computer back in the early 90s. It met with little take up and development was allegedly pressured out of existence by Microsoft.
