While the fracas highlighted, once again, the issue of the right system of intellectual property rights needed to cultivate innovation, it is also increasingly apparent that, just as proprietary software companies are finding out that the developing world is unable to support their existing high-cost business model, the developed world is losing its pricing leverage in the information era.

The United States' attempt to maintain its price premium by tightening control on intellectual property rights in return for trade agreements with developing countries has merely hastened the popularity of budget-priced alternatives.
