Novell Linux Desktop

NLD - solid Linux based distro with licensed patent encumbered
or proprietary stuff (like media players, flash player etc).

box on one DVD."

Being competitive with XP Pro is difficult but I guess you can
simply ignore the thousands of included apps if you like.

"I'm a programmer and need to get work done, not cobbling
something together from several sources that may or may not
have support, or if they do it's speculative to as how long."

Then you'll enjoy all the free programming tools bundled with
Linux or better yet download the NLD SDK for free.

Support is provided by Novell.

If you have a WIN32 specific apps you're probably out of luck.
Then again NLD is available today, Vista is vapourware.
