Wind River wrote the OS, and NASA programmed the Rover. NASA let files fill up the flash memory so there was nothing left for the system to use. Deleting the excess log files and reformatting the flash memory solved the problem.

The OS, VxWorks, was one of the heros in this story. Windows definitely could not have recovered, and Unix/Linux would have probably failed also.
