1) Loverock. Why do you consider this an excuse to deride Linux sales? According to the financial report, Linux sales are on the rise at Novell.
2) This is not the demise of Novell. Novell is still making revenues in the area of $1 billion a year. I sure wish I was going out of business at that rate!
3) Novell still has $1.7 billion in cash and reserves. They're gonna be around for a long time.
4) This time of year has always been a hard time to increase revenues, regardless of what vendor you work with. Customers take holidays just like the rest of us. This quarter report is for the quarter that ended January 31, 2006. That means this includes Thanksgiving, Christmas and all other holidays that fall in that quarter. Therefore, I never look at this quarter as an indicator other than there's bigger sales revenue up ahead. Case in point, I've got a number of Novell customer projects lined up for the next 4 months. My own revenue streams often reflect that of Novell's.
5) Since most of us generally don't view revenue sales as an indicator of widespread use (Linux and other Novell products use an entirely different licensing scheme than that of Microsoft and thus revenue does not = actual number of users), I call upon Novell to also release per-seat numbers. You'll see that while revenue goes down, users/seats are going up. This is the real indicator of cost savings ultimately to the customer.
6) Let's be honest here. How come ZDNet loves to undermine Novell? There's been some amazing stuff coming out of Novell in the last few months. That's never published here. But anything that might give Novell negative publicity, and ZDNet's journalistic integrity is always rushing to the forefront to report on the news. - Posted by: yyuko@...
