up in the trial), there is no technical reason to weld middle ware
to the OS. Unless you consider Precluding Competition a
technical reason.

MS do it so developers KNOW there's a browser, media players
etc already loaded so you can program off it.
Efficiency.

MS did it because the products couldn't compete based on merit.
If these programs were that good, MS wouldn't have to leverage
their assets (see monopoly like position) in the desktop OS. We'll
see what happens after the EU trial and potentially more anti-
trust cases in the US before we make any claims.

But I suppose it no different to being forced to use 'iTunes' on
the Mac

But here's the rub, you can delete iTunes on a Mac. It's not
welded to the OS. You can also delete many of the middleware
apps, in OS X. You are given a choice of what you want on your
machine.
