They are not selling media player, silly!
They are selling Windows. Every couple of years they have a new release of Windows that they work to sell to their customers and it has had more and more functionality each release. Windows grows by leaps and bounds via the APIs that are added each version and accompanied by some applet or feature that illustrates their use.

WMP is just part of the next generation of Windows. Some people don't like that and complain to the Dept of Justice and the world, but they are just whiners. If you want to compete with Microsoft, build a better OS and get people to use it. They can't stop you if you are good enough to do that.

The problem is that whiners really only know how to whine and do not know how to win in the market place.
