If you can't win, sue!
I'm not a big fan of MS' practice. Heck, I'm not a fan of M$ at all. Put it on the record, I felt for the "old" Netscape, and think that they should have won in the court.

But for Real Network? They just plain suck. They behaved like Apple did and close off their own market, thinking that they were the king of a small pond.

They made the stupid move (and still do, as far as I can tell) of forcing all people to pay for the encoder, meanwhile M$ ACTUALLY allowed avi to be created with many different encoders.

It's simple. IF NO ONE DISTRIBUTE CONTENTS IN YOUR FORMAT, NO ONE WILL USE YOUR VIEWER. Look at Adobe's PDF. If you can tolerate the lack of flashy functionalities, you can generate and distribute PDFs for free. When people use your product, your market share goes up. Simple as that.

And what's up with that rnapp.exe back then? Now it could be the wrong filename, but I'm sure everyone who had installed one of those software firewalls would know that RealPlayer actually starts up two applications, and one of them try to connect with something out there continuously, even if you ain't using RealPlayer to view content on the web. And no matter what you disabled in the preference, it doesn't stop. Now that send chills up my spine.
