This article clearly shows that the very notion of "idea patents" is wrong. Patents are to "promote" invention, not to "stop" invention. Software code must be limited to copyright and ONLY to copyright.
There is then the question about the idea being preceded by the ability of a Commodore VIC-20 to read text and speak the contents. The pronunciation was poor, but the idea was there.
If these patents do not precede the VIC-20, they should be invalid because of "prior art". The references to development in the 1990s indicates that the Commodore VIC-20 was clearly "prior art."
This situation, in a manner similar to the Eolas suit against Microsoft, raise a question that is of vital importance to all citizens of the world who by their taxes support public education. The question is the moral, ethical, and legal right to charge those who fund the research that produces a product for a license to use the product. In the same manner that corporations claim the right to patent and copyright that which is developed with their funds, so should those who fund developments with their taxes own the rights to the products developed.
