To each his/her own way...
mosborne said it right:

"You can program for GNOME in C, C++, C#, Java, Python, Ruby, and numerous other languages.

KDE and GNOME generally appeal to two different audiences. Programs designed for one desktop are usable on the other so what is the problem? *nix has always enbraced multiple ways of doing things. There is no need for 'One True Way(tm)'"

Hey, I use Python bindings for GTK/Gnome when I want to hack up a quick GUI utility. I'll use C/C++ only when speed is truly critical, since I've read how much work it takes to add a new GTK class in C.

And to answer your questions markbn, what Vista is borrowing from Unix is LUA(least user access) principles by default. It's existed in Unix/Linux pretty much from the ground up, with the command-line tools to manage users, groups, and access control lists(think sudo), and refined with SELinux. And yes, Gnome does already have GUI tools for most of these things. But I'm not bashing Vista here, it is a good thing the guys at Redmond are catching on and incorporating these features. I only hope they get the masses to actually use these features instead of shackling them to an endless cycle of patches to patches to patches... wink
