RE: Can't think of what to put here
"They're not competing. ... Key words here are that it seems better TO YOU. Others find that Gnome is better. Why stop them having a choice?"

Because it is not a significant choice anymore. There is a LOT of duplicated work between these two projects, so much that it is unjustifiable to waste time to have these two separated. If you configure KDE with a new skin that resembles GNOME, and all those very very few things that GNOME has and KDE does not should be enough.

" First off, most of the stuff that's being implemented in Gnome has already been done within KDE. So this is really just making administration using Gnome easier. "

That makes my point nicely

" Like Rafterman said, they're copying the security model from Unix. They've also borrowed code from BSD (itself a Unix clone) recently and in the past (their TCP/IP stack, for example). "

Security model is a very complicated thing. Windows uses access control list for everything together with roles while UNIX/Linux do not incorporate that by default (several implementations exist), so security models in that sense at least is not something Windows is copying from them.

If they borrowed code from BSD and their TCP/IP implementation that is good, why not? But borrowing code for networking is far different from saying thay they are copying their security model. Command line tools is not really a "security model", so if you can explain your point better, that will be nice
