They're not competing. The developers of each are going about the development in their own ways. If one uses a function from the other, it just means that they recognise how useful that function is, not that they're using it in the hopes of becoming the dominant player.

Key words here are that it seems better TO YOU. Others find that Gnome is better. Why stop them having a choice?

Like Rafterman said, they're copying the security model from Unix. They've also borrowed code from BSD (itself a Unix clone) recently and in the past (their TCP/IP stack, for example).
