Couldn't be more wrong
Did you actually read that before posting it? You have it backwards. Hardware is the commodity and has been since Compaq hacked the PC. Software is proprietary and will remain so as far as anyone can see (Linux's only real claim to fame is that it runs Apache well). This truth accounts for the falling prices of hardware and the rising prices of software. Hardware, by and large, is completely "open source" with the specs available to anyone who wants to compete (commodity). Software, by and large, is completely closed (proprietary). If you believe that popular software is a commodity then get me the spec for Office documents or the source code for the Oracle database server.

Microsoft has always largely stayed away from hardware because there is no money there, at least nothing like the 50+% margins they get on Windows and Office. They have worked on UI elements like mice and keyboards because they thought these areas were hurting the Windows experience (debatable, Windows hurts the Windows experience more.) It is well known that the Xbox exists only to sell software. The "gizmos" talked about in this article are only to sell software also. Microsoft is not going to be coming out with significant hardware offerings. Why? It would be stupid and Microsoft is not stupid.
