Much of the time the utilities and programs on Windows, Solaris and Linux will run unchanged on a later version of the same OS.

I have encountered utilities and programs which will not run on later versions of a Windows OS, Sun OS or Linux distribution. Most often the reason is that there is some dependency on a shared object or dll which is incompatible or not available on the later version of the OS.

Frequently, a program install will refuse to run as the vendor's install is checking for supported OS versions and does not recognize the later version as supported. This has nothing to do with the OS backward compatibility. Very frequently the vendor of the product's answer is to upgrade to a new release which may carry a high migration price.
