Proprietary drivers ... a solution is possible
We all know that open drivers are preferrable. They just get built into the OS and stuff just works without having to do anything. However, for various reasons, proprietary drivers are here to stay. But there is a better way to deal with them. There needs to be a Linux oriented company that specializes in proprietary drivers. They could collect proprietary driver source as it comes out under NDA and compile that source as necessary to supply the market. They would retain rights to the source after a given company ceased operations and thus would guarantee that a device would not be orphaned, a problem which, incidentally, affects Windows as well as Linux. This type of venture would need to work out a viable business model, but I'm sure some creative thought could evoke a solution. In any case, Intel's move demonstrates that Linux on the desktop is alive and well and on the move.
