I have the impression that most of the people who oppose H1B visas don't know what they are talking about. It is NOT cheaper to hire someone with an H1B visa. The employer must proove that it would pay AT LEAST the same salary as for an US citizen or permanent resident. Not all the foreign workers come from poor countries. Someone from Western Europe or Japan would not come to US for a lower salary. And the tax that H1B workers pays is going to support US citizens.
Think of it like this: if you hire enough H1B workers all US people could live on the taxes that these people pay.
