Shame really, because I always try to shop local but chains like Barnes & Noble and Borders have killed many of the little shops. Then you have the giant chains that suck up everything in sight, leaving empty buildings in their wake...

Amazon and many other on-line bookstores do well because they still carry books and offer a way to find older titles. I would love to go to a brick-and-mortar bookstore, but I can't find the books for the coffee and frou-frou. If I can find an employee, s/he is usually a student working for peanuts who can't tell me about the stock.
