If its an eCommerce site your doing
If its an eCommerce site you're doing, try virtual hosting (<$200/year from most ISPs), usually includes a MYSQL Database for free and Perl/PHP support, managed email, and a managed web server already connected to the Internet.

OSCommerce works great as a commerce server, and is widely known by the webshops ($0). If you don't want inventory management or anything fancy, you just need a cookie cart (just search, there's plenty available for free).

"Sendmail" is a good choice for message routing software. Just send the eCommerce messages as emails, there's nothing more interoperable!

You can get your "stock low on part TGA88172T" messages send as email direct to your warehouseman's inbox for example, the orders sent to packing's email address etc. etc.

Customer feedback via email or you can use "webform to email" scripts (see formmail, Alien forms etc., there are plenty of free perl scripts around).

Once you get bigger, you can swap your virtual host for a dedicated box, 49GBP/Month for Linux, 79GBP/month for Windows 2003 for the cheaper ISPs) and for more expensive ones like Rackspace $365.00 /month for Windows, $270.00 for Freebsd or Linux.

No need to go with an XML solution, most of the card clearers use straight web POST SSL anyway. XML adds nothing, it just changes the text layout.

Unless you're an insurance company or similar complex business, you don't need workflow.

Bingo, you've saved yourself 25k up front and hell of a lot more in the long run.
