Re tic-tacking of e-mail spreadsheet attachments

One of the nuisances of using Outlook/Exchange Server is that there is no option to conveniently 'hyperlink' to a UNC file on a server, such that the corresponding full-blown app is invoked when you click it, it just tries to open and object-embed it in your e-mail instead as a 'container'. I think Lotus Notes has more capability than that, from distant memory, being able to link into a sort of DMS or document store (but not a file system directory as such).

I do a lot of analysis work between Access, Excel and ODBC queries, but, in an MS-Office shop with Exchange/Outlook, collaboration tools are a bit weak, and I get tired of working out the best way of relaying spreadsheets to execs -- as they say, there is a great deal of inefficient e-mail duplication of spreadsheets and versioning issues, chewing up extra space on the Exchange server, but that is more a technical problem requiring a DMS linking solution, which could be much better addressed by Microsoft. That's a totally different problem though, with a different fix -- just a question of designing a better groupware model. Isn't it?
