MS-Excel DOES have sharing over networks
What about the 'share workbook' feature of Excel, from Excel '97 onwards? It lets multiple users simultaneously update a spreadsheet, reflects changes on saving or on a timer, has resolution methods for conflicting data changes, tracks changes in a history, etc.

(I found it crashed a bit on sophisticated spreadsheets in 97, e.g. ones which contain macros, and it stops you from doing certain things like changing s/s structures and accessing certain menu items. It's probably best to switch it on mainly for data entry.)

Or is this the point? That there are limits to a shared Excel workbook? Sometimes the workaround is to use MS-Access. ; )
