Remember Shareware
Maybe I've been around, but the old shareware craze of the 80's and 90's pretty much died out. The authors just didn't have the resources to make it go, and nobody paid for the stuff.

Open source is more robust, but, it takes resources to make enterprise level software. Yes, SAP is incredibly expensive (something like the budget of a third world nation to put it in), but, TCO analysis shows it's lots cheaper than building your own.

The Open Source folks just don't have the resources and business acumen in most cases to survive. Gotta make money somewhere.

Will they all get wiped out? No way. Some will survive and do well. Most will go the way of all software. In the trash. Eventually, even SAP will be superceded by something else, but SAP has the resources to fend off competition for a very long time. Open Source doesn't.
