Data Transfer issues across Win-non-Win
This was one of the issues at stake in the EU/MS case. Apparently MS has put a great deal of non-documented hooks into their file server protocols that Win/Win transfers are always faster than Non-Win/Win transfers to give the impression that a Win/Win scenario is a win/win scenario. In fact, it has been proven that just about all non-Win/non-Win transfers are faster than Win/Win transfers. That includes (in no particular order) Novel/Linux, Novel/xxxBSD, Novel/Novel, Novel/Solaris, Novel/Mac and every other permutation and combination of the above mentioned systems. Coming in last places (in no particular order) are Win/Novel, Win/xxxBSD, Win/Linux, Win/Solaris and Win/Mac. In between these you will find Win/Win.

The EU has ruled that MS needs to release their hidden hooks within the API to everyone to whom they have licensed the API. You should be seeing this problem disappear in the future, at least in the EU versions of Windows. Not likely though, I would expect but that is just the cynic in me.
