You forget the MySQL license model. They must be able to offer comercial
licenses. Since InnoDB is GPL, and MySQL does not own the copyright, they can NOT do that. It screws their business plan all to heck.

Well, in time, MySQL will have a storage engine that is as good as InnoDB and this will go away.

It is good that they made the storage engine a replaceable piece.

MySQL will think twice before they partner with another company that can be bought out.
