Presure for this from US based Governement Agencies
During the merger of People Soft with Oracle, our shop kind of got forgotten, the end result of the misque was a $40,000 bill for retroactive maintenance charges, those charges having not been billed for previously according to our fiscal unit. This $40,000 had not been budgeted for and it created a heck of a lot of issues between legals on our side and legals on there's.

At one point I was asked about the feasibility of converting out applications from Oracle to MySQL to which I could raise no objections whatsoever. I have no idea if this information was used in barganing with Oracle but I suspect other shops caught up in the Peoplesoft Oracle merger went through similar situations.

My manager would not buy off on MySQL because it was assumed to be unsupported by independent vendors and an associate was finding that such support was available for a fee not unlike what Oracle charges. In the end Oracle's legals and the State of Washington legals came to an understanding. The check went out in the mail just last week. I put my thumbprint on it.

Oh, part of the misque was that Oricle now is more than one company. Oracle USA is a different company from Oracle EU, best I can tell. I suspect the structure is related to the reluctance of government agencies to allow any IT functions to be outsourced out of country.

The Open Source move by Oracle makes sence in this context. It is nice to have a responsive vendor on board. Huzzah to Oracle. Lets see others follow.

True, Inno is still GPL, but MySQL can't sell commercial licenses.  DonnieBoy | 02/14/06
Oracle bought Innodb and Sleepycat to kill them.  krehbiel | 02/14/06
