I had thought about using SleepyCat for a data store in one of my projects,
but now will have to re-think this. As I understand, SleepyCat owns the rights to all proprietary use since you must link directly with the SleepyCat Libraries. And, who knows how Oracle will steer the project? Well, time will tell how Oracle handles open source. I am interested to see if they just absorb the technology and trash the open source version.

And, here in lies the great part of PostgreSQL. Oracle can not really buy them out. MySQL, JBoss, yes. If Oracle (and possibly others), start buying and trashing the centralised for profit open source companies, the developers will move to the distributed projects without central control such as Linux, PostgreSQL, Apache.

Another central issue here is the License and wheather or not it can be easily forked and then used in combination with proprietary software. If so, companies like Oracle are less likely to try to buy them out since it could provoke a fork with all outside developers moving to the new fork.

Fortunately, Innodb is still GPL  krehbiel | 02/14/06
True, Inno is still GPL, but MySQL can't sell commercial licenses.  DonnieBoy | 02/14/06
Oracle bought Innodb and Sleepycat to kill them.  krehbiel | 02/14/06
