Seems pretty straight forward to me.
Funny, when I first read about Office Live I didn't assume that it would be a Web-based version of Office like so many TalkBack readers do.

First, doing a Web-based version of Office would be pretty lame. Have you checked out any of the Ajax-style "productivity" sites? They look neat until you actually use them. Then you realize tha they're slow, clunky and a shadow of a real client application.

Second, why would Microsoft want to produce a purely Web based version of Office? That would undermine sales of their Office suite which is a good business.

To me it makes complete sense that they'd offer a set of Web-based services that complement Office. Whether you think their offerings are compelling (and how would you know since you haven't even seen them in action) is another matter.
