First you?re talking about the jre the java runtime and I will agree that is very slow bloated and most annoying. I was speaking of Java on the WWW. This is different to access an applet can provide severe speed enhancements. I am assuming your talking mostly of OOo and although it is slow on a desktop it would be uniquely faster on the web. I personally think that both ways Goggle?s or Microsoft?s way of office online will be a total disaster. As you can have OOo on your computer free, and it is more convenient to have a desktop app, rather than a website. You can shell out a mind numbing 800 buck's for office that is still more convenient than using the web.
