Google are great - agreed!
Yes, Google is a phenomenal story. And I been using them and promoting the search engine from 99 beta and impressive it was from early days. DEC Alta Vista must kick themselves for letting the ball drop.

I expect Google will do very nicely for a few years yet. As much as I love Google technology, I can't help but dislike huge monopolies like this. This is why as much as i love Microsoft, I also love the Linux and Open Source movement growth. It gives Microsoft real competition and a reason to stay sharp.

Today's world runs on hype and perceptions. These companies like Google could quite easily fall foul of Internet negative perceptions. Like the Chinese fiasco, or government successful requests for individuals search information which breaks Google's privacy code. Any of a range of ills could make Google synonymous with "evil empire".

Once an Internet biz gets a bad rap it is going to be all downhill. Of course Serg and Larry have the best of intentions and have had very high standards hitherto, but they will not always be around I guess. Would you with that kind of money in the bank? And when the average Joe Capitalist gets his nose in the troff it will be the beginning of the beginning of the end. Giving fabulously useful technology away for free made Google great. Getting Joe Greedy at the helm will kill this Internet legend. I hope it dont, but over the long term, I fear the worst. And yeah, there shall be a wailing and a knashing of teeth by US shareholders. BTW, I have not forgiven Google for not allowing non USA offers on the google IPO. A licence for already wealthy Americans to make easy pickings and sod folks like me that used and promoted Google for years before the float.

I suspect that Bill (Messiah) Gates will have some interesting Internet moves in the coming years. Like search and free adwords. Take a while to blast off but in time.... happy The future is bright, the future is Microsoft.
