money
Money always comes from one place and flows to another. It doesn't just "disappear" (usually!).
Money not spend on Office suits will be spend elsewhere in the economy.

This may not be good news for MS, Sun or Corel. It does reflect times changing.

Considering the price of a licenced Star Office, I don't think Sun would lose much income from that. (Although I've no data to back it up). But Sun couldnot maintain a suitable office suit themselves, keeping up with microsoft office improvements got more expensive every year, so they really had no option left then to opensource it. Nobody wants a lousy office suit which nobody else uses.

Assuming Sun doesn't generate substantial profits from Star Office, you would think they lost money. But what's the alternative? Selling unix without an office suit.... Personal opinion: They would have lost much more money!

I must admit open office doesn't compare very well with ms office, although it is more than sufficient for most tasks.

Contrary to what most people seem to believe I don't think Sun really likes free software. IBM does seem to take a more positive approach to open/free software, but they also intend to keep generating lots of money from AIX, as is their right!

I think most company's don't really know what's the best way to deal with free software. They do see it can't be ignored, that there are opportunities offered and risks involved.

Some companies don't have much choice. Selling an OS which nobody would want to buy in about 5 years or so. So what choice they have other then to jump in the lucrative free software market? (I'm not referring to microsoft).

Every company which is being led by people with courage and vision will profit from free software. Exactly how? Maybe nobody really knows, but it's pretty shortsighted to think the IT industry will suffer. I do believe there are lots of opportunities, and fighting against free software is a battle lost.
