Sun does not have to make any money, it is enough to keep MS out
They will have a much better chance selling servers and other infrastructure with Microsoft out of the picture. Of course they are also helping IBM and HP, but you can't have everything. And, don't forget, all of the translations for OpenOffice can be used with StarOffice. Really no way for Sun to lose here.
