I think a lot of the problem is manuals are written by experts for non-experts. The expert forgets to mention things which are obvious to them.

This is the thunderbird page I came to for developing an extension:

Try to read it from an outsider perspective and see how bad this is. (Not just the broken links).

The XUL sites you gave are tangential, all I want is the text to the email message so I can parse it, yet I have to learn a generic XML GUI widget toolkit to do it?

Its areas like this that could use work and block takeup of open source projects.
