How is it hype?
How is it hype?
Fact: Most PC literate home users are already disabling the Messenger Service.
Fact: By Microsoft's own admission, it's not needed by most home users.
Fact: The Messenger Service is being users as a delivery path for SPAM.
Fact: MS security bulletin MS03-043 warns of a critical flaw in Messenger Service.
Fact: The same bulletin from MS recommends that users disable Messenger Service.

I disagree with AOL's methods, but wholeheartedly agree with their motive. Messenger Service should not be active by default. Several other security problems could also be prevented had MS chosen not to make them active by default. DCOM is another exelent example. Yet, MS chooses to leave ICF turned off by default. These are either the actions of a company that doesn't care about PC security, or that fails to understand it. Not hype. Fact.
