10 Years?
Windows 95 (which came out in 96) is off their support cycle (in theory 10 years later would be 2006). And another thing, we always have some difficulty with Microsoft support. I'm not saying it is always bad; I'm saying it has problems. 50% of the time we fix the problem ourselves. The other times they are helpful and have some neat tricks.

This is what bothers me about MS support. It takes too much time resolving a problem. It takes too long to explain and the technician understand, let alone to fix. Many times the errors are useless to us and MS (why have an error without a reason or cause?). Many times the fixes are easy and simple, but MS buries the solution way down somewhere in their database (if it exists at all) and you cannot find it with calling support. Then it is public and the "Q" article has little to do with the problem. BTW, MS's database is about 6 months or more behind. They have recent articles, but they cannot post them until they go through a drawn out review process. Sometimes it takes a year or so for the more complicated fixes to reach the web site or technet. Many times they want to fix the software instead of putting out the current fix. All of this really bugs me. If something fixes something, post it!

Now Linux has other problems in their support structure. First the distros cause some confusion for the newbies. I find a ton of useful information and fixes, but I have to really look for it. However, I hear the commercial support is quite good. But don't quote me on that. But to date, I have not spent any money on support and I am new at Linux and Unix (well I've been around for years and have worked with them from time to time, but I didn't get too involved until Linux).

Both Windows and Linux have pros and cons. But support should lean more towards Linux in quality. I say this because we ran a product on Solaris and when we had problems, they modified the code on the fly and it was fixed. You just won't get this support with Windows. It is because of the Unix properties of Linux that make this possible. Windows has its merits, but this is not one of them.
