Fedora a good move on the part of Red Hat
Moving from the vanilla Red Hat distro to the community supported Fedora was certainly a good move on Red Hat's part. Hopefully they are retaining the majority of their old Red Hat user base, all of whom were facing some major uncertainties before Fedora emerged. Fedora is in some ways a move toward the Mandrake model which has proven very successful for Mandrake. One of the really great things about Linux is the fact that it lends itself to varied business models, which in turn tend to feed each other. In this case, Fedora is able to move ahead of the Red Hat enterprise product as a virtual proving ground for new ideas and cutting edge technology from traditional open source developers. At the same time the Enterprise version is being super charged with contributions from IBM, HP, Intel, etc. and these same contributions eventually will make their way down to Fedora while proven Fedora software will make its way up to the Enterprise version. While Red Hat spends R+D money on the Enterprise edition and charges for it accordingly, it has almost no overhead at all for Fedora and is able to reap the benefits for free. Watch out! Red Hat is on a roll! I have 2.6 on my Mandrake machine and have found it very servicable. Fedora should be fine with it and users will be able to move back to 2.4 with no problem if necessary. Linux just keeps getting better and better. No way would I ever go back to Windows. I know that for some, Windows is the only solution, and thats fine. Everyone needs to use whatever works for them. But for those who haven't tried Linux, it has some really nice features, people should try it before they bad mouth it.
