Disagree on your points.
(1) Maybe the Linux community is large ... you are talking about.

I believe he is talking about a community that can actually help you, not just the general userbase. This includes many *nix users. In comparison, the Windows community that is able to help you (like write a driver for an unknown device) isn't that large when it comes to just the MS Windows part of it.

Just because everything ships with source code...field of expertise.

No, it doesn't, but there is already a hugh base of tinkers and programmers already there (don't forget all those other Unix programmers). They have gotten GNU/Linux this far, so its big enough. They have already gotten the general problems solved and answered. In most cases, you aren't the first one to have your problem.

Even if there is a HUGE use base, there will not be a back port of applications.... noone would upgrade their PC every 3-5 years.

Back porting in Linux isn't like back porting in other vendors. You are talking about back porting to totally different architectures. Linux 2.2, 2.4, and 2.6 are all still just Linux. The OS architecture is more or less the same. The biggest difference to applications right now is the device system, but 2.6 can be setup to use the old kind. Its like back porting from XP to 2000. Sure some programs might have issues, but most don't. Its no where as hard as going from XP to 98.

Even the biggest differences between Distro versions are usually cosmetic. Instead of putting log files in /var/log you now put them in /log. So in order to backport, you need to recompile the RPM saying it should log to the new spot. Most programs take this as a standard configuration option.

It has to perform, it has to evolve, and it has to come up with something that everyone wants and noone else has. Well, that's just not there. Linux is just another attempt at a GUI, just like everything else post-DOS.

IMHO, it performs excellent, and is continuously evolving. Windows, or Mac can't do what I want but Linux (or any other Unix) can. So, for me, its already there. And Linux isn't "another attempt at a GUI." The GUI is just an addon like any other application. Its an EXTREMELY constomizable OS core that fits into many places.
