Looking as deep as it gets....
"However, with Linux, you feel less of the pinch since you have to pay up every year, whether its for an existing OS or for a new one (not to mention upgrade discounts). And even if you decide to not pay for support. There is always a large community of people that can help you out if not guide you in the right direction. Also, with the source code on hand, you can expect a back port of any application if there is a large enough user base or you can DIY if you have the skills."

Well, here it goes:
(1) Maybe the Linux community is large - but you can't even begin to argue the fact that the Windows community is larger - probably by a factor of 10 to 1000, depending on what applications you are talking about.

(2) Just because everything ships with source code, does not mean that EVERYONE wants to go around and tinker with it. In fact, most people have better use of their time other than picking up another occupation (i.e. programmer) or field of expertise.

(3) Even if there is a HUGE use base, there will not be a back port of applications. It hasn't happened with windows, or apple, or any other os I can think of. Vendors and programmers (even the penguin kind) like to program for the latest OS. If the idea of back porting were valid, then we would still see a lot of new applications for commodore-64's and 286 based machines - and that simply is not happening. We would see new games made for windows ME but not for XP, or for PC-DOS but not Linux. There would be a stagnation in the software sector - noone would buy new OS's, noone would upgrade their PC every 3-5 years.

Just because it's open source does not magically turn it into a windows killer. It has to perform, it has to evolve, and it has to come up with something that everyone wants and noone else has. Well, that's just not there. Linux is just another attempt at a GUI, just like everything else post-DOS.
