This may look like cost savings when you do the math like so. But there are other factors can invalidate your savings. Servers are not really going to become the bulk of your IT expenditure anytime soon, but desktops are.

Take this for example. On Windows, we always have such issues as application "X" need to run OS "B" but OS "A". But I've just bought OS "A" for less than 3 years. And we know that Microsoft will not back port the application. Since application "X" is important for you have rolled out you are forced to move on even before your 7 years are up.

However, with Linux, you feel less of the pinch since you have to pay up every year, whether its for an existing OS or for a new one (not to mention upgrade discounts). And even if you decide to not pay for support. There is always a large community of people that can help you out if not guide you in the right direction. Also, with the source code on hand, you can expect a back port of any application if there is a large enough user base or you can DIY if you have the skills.
