Many other problems
"In a corporate world people use migration tools/scripts to
resolve such problems"

Maybe resolve the two examples I gave of changes to
configuration files, but what about incompatibilities with
libraries, compilers, or the changes to the module interface
between 2.4 and 2.6 kernels?

Unlike the proprietary *nixes, the rate of change in the
Linux kernel is enormous and as yet there is no
magic solution to these problems. Source based
distributions can help with some of these incompatibilities
but not all.

You can reduce the impact by subscribing to one
of the "enterprise" style editions which deliberately slows
the release cycle to improve administration.

I wouldn't say the system is perfect, just that it makes
sense.
