Why do you think the change was a bad move?
"well that's what red hat calls it"

Nowhere on the project's website does it refer to the fedora
project as experimental or for enthusiasts (see http://
fedora.redhat.com/).

They don't because it isn't! It is a complete Linux
distribution.

"not sure why they did what they did, but it was a bad move
"

I'm in no position to know exactly why they did it, but from
their public comments it appeared they wanted to
concentrate their efforts on their enterprise edition.
Whether this was the correct move I guess we'll have to wait
and see (I don't even know on what basis they plan to
measure the moves success).

However, Fedora is a good distribution. It aggressively
incorporates the latest open source technologies (as
demonstrate by the feature list of Core 2 beta). Whilst we
lost the free Red Hat Network I believe we gained
immensely with the new yum repositories mirrored around
the world. The 1.5 years support by the Fedora Legacy
Project is as good as the RHN (with enormously greater
flexibility).
