diversification is a good thing.
Most are if you type uname -r it will dispaly the kernel version, mine lists kernel-2.6.3-rc3-gentoo.

I think one of ther good thing about the different distros is what each one contributes to the community. Gentoo has portage, debian has apt-get and redhat has rpm.

All of theee technologies are open for any other distro to use or modify. In the end I think the ones with nothing interisting to contribute will disapear and the ones with new ideas and technologies will stay.
